Introduction to Design PH (Chris Petit)

4 Hour Afternoon Workshop • 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM • Wednesday, Oct. 17

DesignPH was developed to simplify the design process for achieving the Passive House standard. This plug-in for SketchUp provides a 3D modelling interface that works together with the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) to allow users to create a building model, assign building components, and geographically orient and locate the model. A simplified annual energy calculation provides a quick test of the design. Once a compliant design is achieved, key building characteristics can be exported for integration into PHPP. This workshop will teach attendees how to use the designPH interface and access the components database, assign building components and performance data to the building model, and calculate a simplified annual energy balance for the building. Attendees will learn how to iteratively refine the model to achieve the Passive House criteria, and then export building characteristics and import them into PHPP for more thorough analysis. The session will also walk attendees through how to troubleshoot common issues and errors.

PREREQUISITE: Participants must have a familiarity with Sketchup and PHPP. For tutorials to learn Sketchup basics before the workshop, go to

COURSE REQUIREMENT: Laptop with latest version of PHPP v9, Sketchup v8-2018, designPH v.1.6.0, and MS Excel (or equivalent), all preloaded.

Chris Petit is a Passive House trainer, consultant, and building certifier accredited by the Passive House Institute. He has provided design support and energy modeling services since 2008 with the Center for Sustainable Building Research, Clean Energy Coalition and Regenerative Design. Through CertiPHIers Cooperative, Chris has consulted and certified Passive House projects in the US and Canada. In addition to his work with CertiPHIers, Chris teaches sustainable design, thermal bridge modeling, designPH, PHPP, building energy-efficiency best practices and auditing, and renewable energy. He holds a MS in Architecture from the University of Minnesota. Chris became a CPHD through training with the Canadian Passive House Institute-West and completed Certifier training at the Passive House Institute in Darmstadt.
